U. Gary Charlwood - Founder, Chairman and CEO
German-born U. Gary Charlwood moved to Canada from England in 1966 to pursue a career in the travel industry. He landed in the airline sector and soon rose up the ranks to become a marketing executive for CP Air.

In the early 1970’s, Charlwood left the travel business to go out on his own as a real estate sales professional. He sold an astonishing 118 homes in 15 months, founding his first company named ‘Hunt Realty’ and earning several times in one year what he made in his airline career. He invested his capital in the purchase of the Canadian master franchise rights to the CENTURY 21 Real Estate brand – its first expansion outside of the United States – and built the business into one of the top national real estate brands in Canada. Today, CENTURY 21 Canada is also a business partner of CENTURY 21 Taiwan Real Estate in the burgeoning Asia Pacific region.

In 1980, Charlwood applied his knowledge as a master franchisor to his own international franchise brand - UNIGLOBE Travel International. UNIGLOBE is now in more than 60 countries worldwide.

Charlwood is an inductee to both the International Franchise Association (IFA) and American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Halls of Fame, where he is listed among franchising and travel industry luminaries such as Ray Kroc (McDonald’s founder), Walt Disney, Fred DeLuca (Subway Restaurants founder), Edmund Hillary (Mt. Everest climber) and J.W. Marriott Jr. (hotelier). Charlwood was the first non-U.S. citizen to hold the position of IFA Chair and was Founding Chair of the ASTA Corporate Advisory Council which advocates for the travel industry.

Fluent in English, German, Spanish and French, Charlwood is passionate about franchising. He often speaks at industry events and offers consulting to businesses in the franchising space on business development. Charlwood is an avid long-distance runner and swimmer and has competed in several international marathons.
